Lexus RX VS Genesis GV70
The RX and GV70 start off with very similar pricing, and in fact, the top trims are similarly close in price. Standard performance can be presumed to be similar, and we must presume it is, since Genesis doesn’t publish 0-60 times. But the power output is still very similar, with the GV70 producing a bit more horsepower while the RX produces a bit more torque, and both vehicles have the same 3,500-pound towing capacity. Even interior space is basically the same, with differences measured in tenths of an inch. So, what’s actually different about them? The first thing is efficiency; in standard form with AWD, the RX gets 24 mpg combined1, compared to 22 mpg for the GV70. You can also opt for a hybrid drivetrain on the RX, an upgrade that adds only $700 to the price but increases fuel economy to 36 mpg, paying for itself very quickly. There’s also a plug-in hybrid option for the RX, but the GV70 isn’t offered with any kind of hybrid option. There is an available V6 that gives you a bit more power, but for slightly less money, Lexus offers a performance hybrid drivetrain with a nearly identical power output and 27 mpg, compared to the 21 mpg that you get with the V6 GV70.
The next difference is reliability. Lexus is especially dominant in this area, finishing first in the J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study for 15 of the last 20 years, and still finishing near the top in the years it wasn’t first. Genesis obviously can’t claim this kind of record, but it’s also not even consistent. Genesis finished fourth in 2022, but this year it’s sitting at 13th, with a score that’s slightly worse than the industry average. Lexus is also routinely named the best brand for resale value by Kelley Blue Book3, including this year, and the RX specifically was named as the best in its segment. So, not just quality, but consistent quality is what you get with Lexus.
The RX further extends its lead when it comes to equipment. A good example of this is the stereo, with both vehicles coming with a generic system, but the Lexus comes with 12 speakers to the 9 you get in the Genesis. You can upgrade to a 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen system in the GV70, but this falls well short of the 21-speaker, 1,800-watt Mark Levinson system offered in the RX. Then there are the options. With Lexus, things like a heated steering wheel or a sunroof are just options that you can select, but Genesis offers basically no options apart from paint colors and accessories, with trim level changes required for any actual equipment changes or upgrades. So, if you want a heated steering wheel on the base trim of the RX, it’s $250, but the trim upgrade required to have one on your GV70 is $3,200, just as an example. A la carte options are always the better way to shop.

The Lexus RX remains the king of its segment for very good reason. While the GV70 has its good qualities, it just isn’t the complete package that the RX is.
